Since "smoking" (or "smoke") is "free," this expression could be interpreted as "free smoking." However, the meaning is the exact opposite: "non-smoking." Be careful not to make a mistake! When "free" is placed at the end of a sentence, as in "~ free," it means "without." By the way, when "free" is placed at the beginning, it means "free of charge."

smoking(smoke)が free ということで、「喫煙自由」とも取れそうなこの表現。意味は全く逆で「禁煙」の意味なので、間違えないように注意しましょう！～ free のように、free がおしりに付く場合は「～がない」という意味になります。ちなみに free が頭に付くときは「無料の、自由な」という意味になりますよ。

It can be confusing, since non-smoking can also be expressed as non-smoking. If you can't remember, try imagining smoking-free as "absolutely no cigarettes" → "you can't smoke" → "non-smoking."

禁煙自体は non smoking とも表すため、混乱してしまいますよね。どうしても覚えられない人は、smoking free「タバコが全くない」→「タバコは吸えない」→「禁煙」とイメージするといいですよ。
